Each
year the Living Museum sets itself a number of goals and works out a program as a framework. Many of
the projects within the program build on earlier projects
to extend the Museum's intellectual and cultural assets
which are then available for anyone as a cultural resource.
These
goals are part of a business plan which outlines how
human and financial resources can be gathered to continue the active
role of this unique 'ecomuseum' in its ongoing contribution to local
social assets. The business of the Living Museum is
to facilitate the participation of communities in Melbourne's
western region in collecting, interpreting and presenting their own
history. Although the Living Museum's annual goals may change each
year, they relate to the original aims and the mission statement:
'Melbourne's
Living Museum of the West is a community museum which
actively involves the people of Melbourne's west and others in documenting,
preserving and interpreting the richness and depth of the region's
social, industrial and environmental history.'
During
this year of Federation celebration we gave talks on local heritage
and culture, designed presentations of the region's heritage,
restored grasslands, held countless workshops and attended many meetings,
counselled councils on Aboriginal reconciliation issues, trained quite
a few temporary employees, photographed
flowers, stone walls and dancers, and were
photographed in return by local newspapers for a range
of projects and events.
