Part
of the original aims of the Living Museum, and
an aim this year, has been to act as a model or example of
how 'ecomuseum' principles could apply in a region. One of
the ideas of an 'ecomuseum' is to approach a specific geographical
area from a museum point of view and to 'interpret'
that geographical area, bringing in the 'community'
as participants in that exercise.
Being open and responsive to the 'community' means
that each year's program will be changed and added to by input by the
community. This works in many ways, from participation
of local workers in research to events suggested, recomended and even
organised by others in Living Museum venues with Museum support.
It is in some ways a research and development museum
exploring new ways to be a museum and as such is
a kind of ongoing experiment or cultural incubator.
That it does work as such a model is evidenced by
inquiries from others in the cultural sector. In 2001, these
included a delegation from Brisbane City Council investigating methodology
for a new museum for Brisbane and an approach from Ires: Instituto Richerche
Econmico Sociale de Piemonte in Italy, which is researching and documenting
ecomuseums throughout the world.
