A Major Regional Venue

The Museum operates from the Visitor Centre in Pipemakers Park, a Parks Victoria park in the City of Maribyrnong. The geographical parameters of the Museum cover the western region of Melbourne, from the shores of Hobsons Bay, north to the City of Hume and west to the Brisbane Ranges. For projects that work with 'ecomuseum' principles, the Living Museum often exports its work beyond these borders.

The home base at Pipemakers Park is the conceptual gateway for the region in terms of museum interpretation.

The Museum management have been working with Parks Victoria for years to develop the park in a variety of ways that fit our mutual agendas to improve visitor experience. This, of course, is an ongoing challenge demanding continual work and resources.

This year saw the beginning of work to bring a new community space into being through the partial restoration of the large bluestone building on the site. The Museum gained a grant from Environment Australia to make these basic improvements.

The main work will begin early in 2002.
