The Custodians Welcome Event


In June 2003 a group of Aboriginal people from Melbourne welcomed a group of newly arrived migrants, the Karen people of Burma, to ‘the land’ at Pipemakers Park in the City of Maribyrnong. Launch of The Gathering Place

Grimes Reinactment

On the weekend of February the 1st and 2nd, 2003, Melbourne's Living Museum of the West in partnership with Friends of the Maribyrnong celebrated the bi-centenary of the exploration of the Maribynong and Yarra Rivers by the Grimes Survey Team. Special Visitors 2003

Governors Visit

Museum Associate, Libby McKinnon, tells the Governor of Victoria, John Landy, the story of the History of the Land Garden at Pipemakers Park and its part in the work of an ecomuseum. For more information about the gardens go to the History of the Land Garden pages within our Our Work.

Ecomuseum Visitor

The Living Museum is part of an international museum culture that discusses theory and practice. This year we were visited by a representative of the Japanese ecomuseum movement, Kazuoki Ohara who is seen here recording the History of the Land Garden.

Edgar Harris

Renewing old acquaintances Museum staff document a tour of the Gnappi Gnappi Dancers from Cairns as part of a cultural exchange with the City of Hobson’s Bay. The lead dancer and elder of the group, Edgar Harris, was formerly Aboriginal Cultural Officer for the Living Museum in the late nineties.


Pipemakers Park

PICNIC

Renovations to the bluestone building at Pipemakers Park have provided a new community space in the western region. During a gap in the renovations program an exhibition of contemporary art called 'Picnic' was held. For more information about this exhibition go to the PICNIC pages within our Our Work.


Centenary Awards

Olwen Ford, Peter Somerville and Peter Haffenden of the Living Museum receive their Centenary of Federation Medals at Williamstown Town Hall from the Federal Member for Gellibrand, Nicola Roxon. Local State Members of Parliament, Bruce Mildenhall and Telmo Languiller also took part in the ceremony.


Stone Upon a Stone

A dry stone walling workshop is held at St. Annan in New South Wales as part of the program associated with the travelling exhibition, ‘A Stone Upon A Stone’, which toured Victoria and NSW in 2003. For more information see <astoneuponastone.com>



Newmarket Saleyards Reunion

The Living Museum has attended every annual reunion at Newmarket Saleyards since they closed in 1986, providing an exhibition and videos from one of its first major research projects.The Mayor of Moonee Valley, Eugene Hammer (left), and reunion organiser, Joe Raymer, share a beer at the event.
