DAVID WATERS
We met a man who carves basalt or bluestone. Basalt is the bedrock of
Melbourne's western region and one could argue that this stone has defined
the appearance of Melbourne. It is the result of lava flows from five million
to one million years ago, relatively recent as far as bedrock goes, and
to some extent defines the course of the Maribyrnong River.
A block of bluestone won a prize in a Paris Exhibition in 1908 for being
such a fine specimen of stone. A strange concept indeed for those of us
who banged our knees so often in footy games on western ovals. Dave was
attracted to this particular stone and has explored shape and form in stone.
We have been trying to find money for Dave to make a carved bluestone wall
and have provided space for him to carve while we wait for such a project
to come together.
Meanwhile Dave carves more shapes in this beloved stone.
